GPS systems are usually left for the elite but South Launceston hockey coach Craig Williams has brought local sport into the 21st century. Williams has been using the system for the past five weeks to assist with player education and his training regime. The Northern hockey club is one of few in Tasmania using the technology to track and obtain data. Williams, who also coaches the Australian country women's and state under-18 women's teams, said it was a valuable tool.

``The GPS tells me how far they run, the amount of time stationary compared to moving, their max speed, their overall speed, and I am able to track their position on pitch with a link through Google Earth,'' Williams said.
``It's there to educate the players because I can bring up their movements on the pitch.
``To a striker I can say `you didn't get down far enough' because the GPS tells me so.''

Williams said the information obtained showed that women averaged five to seven kilometres a game and the men ran between 6.4 and eight kilometres a match.
The system will be used during the state under-18 championships in Launceston over the June long weekend and was used on the country women's side tour of Thailand and Malaysia a few months ago.
Williams is also coaching the Tasmanian under-21s, who will take part in nationals in Adelaide on July 12.
